“Where we are sitting right now is part of the coastal dunes area that’s very unique to western Michigan, unique to the United States and somewhat unique to the world.”
You’re listening to “The Ottawa Sands Project,” a 25-minute documentary sharing the unlikely story behind how the massive dune land park came to be.
“The moment I heard about Ottawa Sands, I got in touch with our park department, and I said this is a very cool story and it deserves to be told.”
Scott Vandenberg is the Ottawa County Digital Communications Specialist who directed and produced the piece. It has now won a first-place Savvy Award from the City-County Communications and Marketing Association in a national contest against more than 1,100 entries.

The team also won recognition for its “Ottawa Out Loud” podcast but Vandenberg says the work is about much more than awards.
“Ottawa County is really making a lot of investments into communicating with residents and it's a huge priority making sure the residents know what's going on so that they can see the hard work that their government officials and staff are putting in.”
“The Ottawa Sands Project” can be found on the Ottawa County YouTube channel as well as its Parks and Recreation channel.
The podcast is on multiple common platforms.
