The mural, entitled Reimagine Safety, was painted by Johnny Van Patten and Edwin Anderson on the outside of LINC UP’s Grand Rapid’s headquarters in the 900 block of Hall Street Southeast. Partnership Development Manager Isaac DeGraaf explains the mural’s style.
“It’s utilizing the imagery of the Kokopelli from Native American culture, who would go around with his flute and, in their stories, would play, and they kind of talk about how he sowed the seeds of fertility and community.”
Over the past 25 years, LINC UP has worked to advance racial equity and community revitalization by developing affordable housing and connecting residents to essential sources, something DeGraaf says the mural represents.
“What keeps communities safe is us, and that’s by investing in us. Investing in community. Investing in the things that allow community to thrive and prosper, and that’s what will lead to safe, vibrant, thriving communities.”
The organization is also collecting for its Build Change fundraising campaign, which aims to raise $25,000 in honor of its 25 years of service.
