Starting Monday, September 22, drivers will find lane closures on eastbound and westbound I-196 at US-131 as crews work on five bridges along the Grand Rapids’ interchange.
“It's the busiest interchange in the whole west side of Michigan, I believe.”
MDOT Communications Representative John Richard says drivers have options for detours.
“If you catch it before the split on 96 and 196 you can stay on 96 to pick up southbound 131 so there are ways around that. You can stay on westbound 196 and then go northbound. You can flip around at Ann Street or Leonard. You can get off on the local system."
The westbound 196 ramp to southbound 131 will be closed for the duration of the project.
Eastbound 196 will close completely over two weekends, to be announced later.
The $1.3 million bridge rehabilitation project is expected to finish late October.
