Michigan House Republicans are standing by their starting block in state budget talks as the governor pushes the Republican House and Democratic Senate to compromise

Both sides are sticking to their talking points with fewer than two weeks now remaining for lawmakers to pass a budget or face a partial government shutdown.

Senate Democrats say a budget compromise needs to include both cuts and new revenue to pay for things like road repairs.

But Republican House Appropriations Committee Chair Ann Bollin says lawmakers need to take belt tightening seriously first.

“Look at where can cut first, where can we save money, where can we restructure, can we be more efficient and be able to expand. Like that’s what we have to do.”

The governor says she sees room for both sides to get what they want in negotiations, but neither has shown much inclination to compromise.
