NPR of America Incorporated, the U.S. subsidiary of Japan-based Nippon Piston Ring Company Limited, is closing its Grand Haven Township plant, according to a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification posted to the Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity website.
The plant will officially close in 2027, but most of the layoffs will happen by the end of 2025.
NPR manufactures internal combustion engine parts. The company’s Grand Haven facility is one of two manufacturing plants in the U.S., the other located in Kentucky.
Employee separations are expected to happen gradually, with the first 50 layoffs happening between October and December of this year. The remaining employees will be laid off in several rounds through February 2027 when the company’s lease on the plant expires.
In a July 9th shareholder notice, the company stated it aims to “create synergies through business integration, exploring and implementing various measures for both sales expansion and cost reduction. As part of these efforts, we have determined that transferring the production functions of the Michigan Manufacturing Plant to other sites will enable us to optimize production.”
