King Company, on behalf of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, has begun dredging the Muskegon Harbor entrance.
Crews are expected to work through mid-September, depending on weather conditions.
Dredging is a routine operation that helps maintain safe navigation for vessels entering and exiting the harbor.
This year there’s a change in where dredged materials, or spoils, will go.
In the past, spoils were deposited on the beach, but this year they will be placed underwater off the shoreline extending south.
Natural wave action will then redistribute it along the shoreline over time.
Dredging is not expected to impact public beaches or city operations.
Similar dredging may be needed again next year, potentially extending further into the channel toward Muskegon Lake.
