“It’s kind of a refresher on being properly prepared both from a training and equipment standpoint.”
President of Life EMS Ambulance Mark Meijer says this year’s annual Emergency Preparedness in Sports Training brought together around 60 athletic trainers, coaches, school nurses and community volunteers for intensive, scenario-based instruction.
“In essence, if the trainers are at the student athlete’s side initially, that they know what to look for and are prepared and also know that, ‘Okay, the ambulance is maybe down in the end zone and we know when to flag them out and what needs to happen form there.’”
Attendees learned how to handle cardiac arrest, spinal immobilization, heat exhaustion, and other life-threatening emergencies in order to refresh critical skills when seconds matter most.
“So, it’s really being prepared and not waiting till the last minute that, ‘Oh, gosh! I sure wish I would’ve known where the AED is. Is it inside that door at the gym or is it in the stands?’ You know, that kind of preparedness.”
This is the 11th year Life EMS Ambulance hosted the event.
