The Macatawa Greenway is a network of permanently protected public and private lands stretching from Zeeland Township to Lake Michigan. It offers hiking and biking trails, parks, and other outdoor recreational activities.
Conceived in the mid-1990’s, the greenway was incorporated in 1996 and merged with Ottawa County’s Outdoor Discovery Center in 2009.
This year, thanks to a partnership between Holland Township and the Outdoor Discovery Center Network, construction began on a new 2.1-mile natural surface trail connection. The project is part of a larger initiative to enhance the Macatawa Greenway by delivering key infrastructure improvements such as a trailhead, modern restroom facility, and parking area at Hawthorne Pond.
A nearly $348,000 grant from the Land and Water Conservation Fund has been recommended to support the construction of the year-round restroom facility at the 84th Avenue access site at Upper Macatawa Natural Area. The new facility will include showers and a water collection system.
Bidding on the project is scheduled to begin once a grant agreement is finalized.
