Senator Elissa Slotkin met with leaders at Corewell Health Helen Devos Children’s Hospital in Grand Rapids Monday to discuss President Trump’s Big Beautiful Bill on Michigan’s healthcare system

When it comes to healthcare in the upcoming budget, U.S. Senator Elissa Slotkin wants three things: restoration of subsidies for working people on government Health Insurance Marketplace plans, restoration of Medicaid cuts and...

“I want money restored for cancer research. I want health research put back in because the stories of the families and the doctors that we just came from, in Corewell Health, are the stories of innovation in medicine.

Slotkin notes the Michigan Hospital Association estimates a $6 billion loss to the state’s hospital systems over 10 years, resulting in most cutting services.

The Michigan Democrat explains rural hospitals will be impacted most and patients may need to drive longer distances seeking medical care.

“Suddenly you're talking about people maybe having to go to Wisconsin, people literally having to really make tough choices. There's rural communities all over the state right now that are dealing with it.”

Slotkin says hospital leaders are also worried about Medicaid reimbursements.

“They're very open about the fact that if they're not getting money reimbursed from Medicaid, if they're not getting as many patients who have health insurance walking through the ER, they have to charge patients more money who do have private insurance.”

Slotkin says Republicans have spoken publicly about amending the bill to fix some of the issues and hopes that happens before the new budget October 1.
