Lofts of Muskegon project receives EGLE grant for site clean-up

Pivotal Development LLC

A Muskegon housing project is one of six in the state receiving a Brownfield Redevelopment Grant from the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy

The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy is awarding over $4 million creating nearly 290 new housing units in Michigan. The Lofts of Muskegon has been allocated $850,000.

Located in the 100 block of West Muskegon Avenue, the nearly 1-acre site has been home to a gas station, auto shop, and rubber company. It’s now designated for affordable housing with the construction of a four-story, 46-unit apartment building.

The property, which has been vacant since 2016, is contaminated with petroleum compounds and chlorinated solvents. The EGLE grant will pay for site assessments, demolition of existing structures, clean-up and disposal of contaminated soil.

The $16 million development will have units reserved for tenants making 30%-80% of the Area Median Income.

Construction is expected to be completed in the spring of 2026.
