After her arrest while allegedly trying to interfere with immigration agents detaining a man in Grand Rapids, Sharon Smith thinks police officers and deputies should be doing more to protect Kent County residents from ICE

“I was arrested two days ago.”

Addressing the Kent County Board of Commissioners, Sharon Smith explained what led to her arrest.

“I pulled up on about 10 unidentified men this week detaining a Hispanic man. I asked them who they were and what they were doing. They did not identify themselves. Their cars were unmarked. Some were masked. It’s what is happening around the country. Its terrifying.”

Smith says she followed the ICE motorcade to their base, and that’s when she was arrested.

“I parked my car in a way that would prevent them from leaving.”

Grand Rapids police say Smith was arrested for obstructing a public road. Instead of handcuffing her, Smith says police and deputies should do more to protect at risk residents.

“They are here to protect the residents of our county. I was doing nonviolent civil disobedience.”
