“Mead Johnson is looking to, what they would refer it to as a remediation of the site, so the assets they have at the site currently are nearing the end of their life.”
Zeeland City Manager Tim Klunder says to do this, Mead Johnson requested the rezoning of 605 and 633 East Main Street from residential to industrial, which the city council approved Monday in a 6-1 vote. One parcel contains an empty single-family residence with a barn, and the other…
“That actually had two structures that included eight townhomes. Those are still occupied and my understanding is I believe Mead Johnson has worked with those residences to stay till the end of the year if they so desire.”
Once vacant, those structures will be demolished to make way for Mead Johnson’s new facility, which could begin construction as early as 2026.
Some area residents expressed their concerns to city council that included increased traffic, odor, noise and pollution, but Klunder says Mead Johnson is working with the community to address those concerns.
“I think city council feels there is a balance that can be created there where we are, in fact, working with Mead Johnson, enabling them to do this remediation project, but also doing it in a conscious manner.”
Mead Johnson says the project will enable essential upgrades to its facility and support the work of nearly 500 local employees.
