The 35th district seat representing Saginaw, Bay City, and Midland has been vacant since the beginning of the year

It's never taken Whitmer this long to call a special election.

The Democratic governor has repeatedly said there will be one but has never specified her timeline.

Democrats hold a one-seat majority in the state Senate, and polling shows the 35th district is a toss-up.

Attorney General Dana Nessel says she's thought Whitmer should call the election for quote "quite some time."

"I think that the people of that Senate district deserve to be represented, so.”

Pamela Pugh, a Democrat and president of the Michigan State Board of Education, says she plans to run for the seat.

No Republicans have announced their bids.
