Michigan DIFS offers insurance tips during National Homeownership Month

The state is offering guidance on being prepared for emergencies and ways to protect your home

The Michigan Department of Insurance and Financial Services or DIFS is participating in National Homeownership Month by sharing tips with Michiganders about having the right insurance coverage in place to be prepared for emergencies and protect their homes.

DIFS Director Anita Fox says, quote, “Homeownership creates a strong financial foundation for consumers,” said “Having adequate insurance coverage and being prepared for emergencies are keys to protecting your investment.” End quote.

In a news release, DIFS is offering these tips to help homeowners protect their property:

They include, reviewing your homeowners or renters’ policy. They say sometimes valuables like jewelry, artwork or other high-priced items are not adequately covered.

You should also talk to your insurance agent or company about flood insurance. Flooding they say, it typically not covered unless you have insurance. They advise safely storing copies of all insurance policy declaration pages and insurance card and say you should shop around for the best coverage that fits your needs and budget.
