Habitat Kent’s Imagine Campaign sets a bold goal: build or rehabilitate 100 homes in Grand Rapids over the next three years.
The nonprofit organization plans on raising $8 million, six of which have already been raised toward the estimated total cost of more than $33 million.
All 100 units will be added to the Roosevelt Park, Black Hills, and Baxter neighborhoods. This includes Pleasant Hills, a five-story, 54-unit building near Habitat Kent’s Roosevelt Park headquarters.
The target is in response to a 2022 Housing Next study finding that Kent County needs to add 35,000 housing units by 2027, 14,000 of those needed in the city of Grand Rapids alone.
Since its founding in 1983, Habitat Kent has built around 500 homes, averaging between 10 to 20 homes per year, with 2,000 volunteers on average logging more than 20,000 hours of work.
Construction has already begun on seven units.
