Guiding Light is marking one year of its women’s recovery program with the dedication of Kendra’s House on Grand Rapids’ southeast side

“Our daughter Kendra struggled with alcoholism and it’s her legacy that lives on here at the house with helping others get the help they need.”

Marcia Draft’s daughter, Kendra, who lost her life to alcohol addiction in 2023, was honored with a plaque hung in the entryway of Kendra’s House, Guiding Light’s recovery house for women battling addiction, homelessness, and hunger.

“My sister Melody was able to purchase the home and rent it to them until the funding became available for them to take it over.”

In the past year, Kendra’s House has served as a safe, structured environment for up to 12 women experiencing recovery together. Thirty-five women have entered the program and nine have completed it. Women like House Manager Sam Belanger.

“Surround yourself with better people. Build that community so that you can stay clean and sober. That’s what this program has done for me and I’m incredibly grateful.”

In 2023, Guiding Light opened two sober living homes – Esther’s House and Ruth’s House – providing housing and ongoing support for women transitioning out of Kendra’s House.
