Kent County Veterans Services addressing veteran suicide with free gun locks

KCVA is offering free gun locks to veterans and their families in an effort to prevent veteran suicides

Thanks to a donation from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, Kent County Veterans Services is offering free firearm cable locks to residents.

Gayle Witham, Community Engagement Partnership Coordinator with the Battle Creek VA Medical Center, says it’s a simple but powerful step to help keep veterans and their loved ones safe at home and in the community.

According to a 2022 VA report, over 6,400 U.S. veterans died by suicide that year. By increasing access to gun safety resources KCVS hopes to be a part of the solution.

Any Kent County resident can pick up a free gun lock at the KCVS office at 836 Fuller Avenue Northeast in Grand Rapids.

If you or someone you know is in crisis, contact the Veterans Crisis Line 24/7 by dialing 988, then pressing 1, or text 838255.
