“Charges have been brought on 17-year-old Cartiyae Pascal.”
Grand Rapids Police Chief Eric Winstrom says they suspected Cartiyae Pascal in the murder of 15-year-old Amillier Penn, but they needed witnesses to tell what they saw before bringing charges.
“Didn’t have to be 345 days. If people came forward the first day this case would have been wrapped up in a week or two.”
15-year-old Ammiler Penn was murdered last June while playing football with friends on Umatilla Street SE. Shot 8 times over what the police chief says calls a beef between teenage boys.
“Typical teenage boy stuff that if you and I were teenagers and we had a beef maybe it would be settled in a fist fight or something but, in this case, it took a very tragic turn.”
17-year-old suspect Cartiyae Pascal is already in jail, accused of attempted murder after a convenience store shooting September 1st. During the murder investigation he was not a threat to the public or a flight risk,
“We were able to then take our time cross all the t’s dot all the i’s.”
Lead detective Tony Leonard has been working the case, interviewing witnesses, for months.
“It’s a sense of relief. But Millie is gone and we have another teenager his life is impacted by this as well.”
