Bus service expands connecting Laketown Twp. to other lakeshore communities

A new on-demand bus service starts Thursday, connecting communities along the lakeshore, now including Laketown Township

The Interurban Transit Authority is now serving Allegan County’s Laketown Township.

“Laketown can't be isolated. You know our citizens work in Douglas. They work in Holland. They work in Grand Rapids. Our kids in Laketown are going to either the Holland schools or the Hamilton schools. We just need to connect with everybody.”

Supervisor and Interim Manager Steven Ringelberg says two groups of residents have been asking for bus service: parents of children who don’t yet drive to jobs or activities, and senior citizens.

“It's to be able to access all kinds of resources whether that's doctors’ appointments, grocery stores, pharmacies, lunch with friends and they either don't want to drive or they don't feel comfortable driving anymore.”

Beginning May 1, residents can ride the bus for $1 per adult, 50 cents per child.

“You can call between 7 and 7 every day of the week and between 7 and 11 PM on Fridays and Saturdays in the summer to get the bus to come and pick you up and take you wherever you want to go in the service area.”

Which includes Laketown, Saugatuck, Douglas, Fennville.

“And this summer it includes three wineries down to the south of Douglas. “

Township officials budgeted money to subsidize the bus service for a six-month trial. If it’s successful, they’ll consider asking for a millage to fund it going forward.
