Grand Rapids city officials and stakeholders broke ground Wednesday afternoon on Canal Park’s revitalization project

The reimagined Canal Park will offer residents and visitors a more accessible destination featuring enhanced amenities and inclusive recreational opportunities.

A new Owashtanong playscape is being constructed, designed in partnership with the Grand River Bands of Ottawa Indians. The immersive, river-themed play area will provide an educational and interactive experience that tells the story of the Grand River and its significance to the region.

Other amenities include a rentable pavilion, paved trails, and a barrier-free canoe and kayak launch.

The Canal Park project is part of a larger plan for improving accessibility to the Grand River, with upgrades prioritizing accessibility, community gathering and flood protection.

The project is funded by the Grand Rapids parks millage, private donations and a $750,000 Michigan Economic Development grant.
