The bills would take a portion of the state’s sales tax revenue and put it toward a new “Public Safety and Violence Prevention Fund” for programming, local law enforcement, and crime victims.
The package would set aside more money for the fund than bills that nearly passed last legislative term. That’s as another plan to fund roads could also draw from sales tax revenue.
Republican House Speaker Matt Hall says budget cuts would pay for roads and the fund.
“They capped it last session at 75 million. We want to actually dedicate the full amount that represents that and we can fit those two things together so we're going to set priorities.”
Hall says a vote on the safety fund bills will come this month.
