Dozens of protesters appeared outside a veterans hospital in Ann Arbor this weekend to share concerns about federal changes to veterans services

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs has seen staff laid off, telehealth workers called back to offices that may not have space for them, and its union contracts targeted in an executive order from President Donald Trump.

Trump has also signed a spending bill that cut funding for veterans exposed to toxic chemicals.

Democratic Congresswoman Debbie Dingell says this is happening as policymakers on all sides of the political spectrum have just begun to improve care for veterans.

“We have to honor our commitment and keep working to go forward. And when you see this many people understanding that we've got a moral responsibility who fought to keep us free, that's what they're out here for, fighting for those veterans.”

VA leadership says the layoffs and other changes will help it run more efficiently and better serve veterans.
