The Rotary Club of Grand Rapids is presenting local entrepreneur Alan Abraham with this year’s Frederik Meijer Service Above Self Award

“We grew up in a very faith-based family and I think we were just taught to do for others, and of course Rotary is an organization that does a lot for other people.”

Alan Abraham was third generation president of his family’s wholesale grocery distributor, SAS Incorporated, headquartered in Walker. He retired in 2019. He’s also been a member of the Rotary Club of Grand Rapids since 1986.

“Well, it’s kind of ironic because S. Abraham & Sons, we call it SAS, and the award is called the Service Above Self Award, which is also SAS.”

The Frederik Meijer Service Above Self Award is given annually to someone in recognition of their dedication to service and leadership in the community.

Through his Rotary work, Abraham has spent decades ensuring that children and seniors in need receive food and personal hygiene items, highlighting his belief in the power of empathy.

“It’s been a part of my life for a long time, and I enjoy it. I enjoy the people, I enjoy the work that we do, so thank you very much.”

Abraham will be presented with his award on May 13th.
