“It’s been a great experience, but at this point in time, the reason I’m leaving, I’m still enjoying the work, but the time has come to relax.”
Kentwood Community Development Director Terry Schweitzer joined the city’s Planning Department fresh out of Western Michigan University. Nine years later, he was Department Director, overseeing the city’s planning and zoning services and leading a team supporting six city boards.
“It was on a growth spurt when I started working in 1978.”
Schweitzer says since then, Kentwood has developed into a diverse and welcoming community, one that he helped create partnering with the city’s engineering and public works departments reimagining Kalamazoo Avenue from a street into a four-lane boulevard.
“I think that that’s been important to keep that area as attractive for people to live and to work, and so that was one thing that just being a part of that process was very satisfying.”
Schweitzer plans on spending his retirement with his wife and grandkids, traveling and following the Detroit Tigers. His final day will be April 2nd.
