A stretch of downtown Grand Rapids riverfront bordering Acrisure Amphitheater is being revitalized

Last week, Grand Rapids’ Community Development Committee approved an $18 million agreement with commercial construction firm Owen-Ames-Kimball Company for phase 1 improvements to the Grand River East Riverfront. City Engineer Tim Burkman.

“So, this will be a significant enhancement along our east riverfront, specifically between the railroad tracks and 131 adjacent to the Acrisure Amphitheater currently under construction.”

Designs for the project released in August 2024 show public riverfront access for residents in Heartside, Roosevelt Park, Black Hills, and the city’s southern neighborhoods.

“Project will include a half-mile river edge pathway, 4.5 acres of greenspace, expansive seating areas overlooking the river, water access through a kayak launch that will be included, and it will also serve as an additional access point to the west gate of the amphitheater.”

The majority of funding for the project comes from the Greenway Grant, which was obtained by Downtown Grand Rapids, Inc.

The amphitheater is expected to be complete in May 2026.
