Children in Classroom

The plan announced Wednesday would expand cash assistance and tax credits for parents of young children

The plan would give a $5,500 tax credit to parents of kids three and under. It would also add money to the state’s next budget to give pregnant people and moms with infants direct cash payments.

Democratic Senator Sylvia Santana says this is the type of help moms in her district are asking for.

“They need more support, they need this program, and we need to provide it to them.”

But Jarrett Skorup of the “Mackinac Center for Public Policy” is skeptical the tax credit would just go to families in need. He says the cash payments are an interesting debate. But…

“Before expanding this into using new money to do it, we should look at doing it with the current money that we send out.”

The issue is likely going to come up in budget negotiations.
