In response to the rising cost of groceries and increasing food insecurity, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints organized the delivery of non-perishable food from Salt Lake City to Kent County

The semi-truck carrying enough food for 33,000 meals was delivered to North Kent Connect in Rockford, a resource hub for people experiencing food, clothing, and financial insecurity. Over 50 volunteers loaded the food into vans and distributed it to 12 West Michigan food banks, including Grand Rapids, Walker, Greenville, Muskegon and Fremont.

“The need is great. It’s always been great, but it feels just particularly acute right now.”

Neal Buckwalter is Stake President for the local congregations of the Church.

“With rising cost of living, housing, food prices. People are feeling it very intensely.”

Executive Director for North Kent Connect Adrienne Goodstal echoes those sentiments.

“There’s so many families that are living paycheck to paycheck that when the cost of eggs rises to $5, they’re no longer able to provide those healthy items for their families, so we step in and we fill the gap.”

The Church allocates over $1 billion annually to humanitarian efforts around the world.
