Under DeHaan’s leadership as chief, the department achieved national accreditation, greatly improved incident management preparedness, and enhanced overall safety and security on campus through a security camera project

“I’ve had the pleasure of working at Grand Valley full time for the last 38 years and I’ve been licensed as a law enforcement officer working at the university, come March 1 it’ll be 42 years, so it’s been a pleasure and an honor for me to be able to work and serve this community.”

Director of Public Safety, Chief of Police at GVSU will formally retire from Grand Valley State University come June. University officials say under DeHaan’s leadership as chief, the department achieved national accreditation, greatly improved incident management preparedness, and enhanced overall safety and security on campus through a security camera project. DeHaan acknowledges that’s as a major accomplishment.

“We were able to really secure one of the most robust security camera systems, most certainly in the state, in fact, we’ve got, a security camera system, we are the third largest for an institution of higher learning in the nation. And again, I think it really aids in the overall safety of what we’re doing.”

De Haan says GV Police Captain, Leah Heaton will serve as interim director of Public Safety starting March 2nd. DeHaan will spend his final few months at Grand Valley supporting Heaton with the transition. A formal celebration for DeHaan will be announced at a later date.
