And after hearing an update from on the plan to decommission the J.H. Campbell power plant in Port Sheldon Township. Ottawa County commissioner Sylvia Rhody is still
“Very concerned about the closure.”
During an update on the J.H Campbell plants future Dena Isabell from Consumers Energy said closing the plants 3 coal burning generators will save the utility money.
“About $600 million savings over 20 years.”
And she says the natural gas burning Covert Township plant near South Haven will replace Campbells generating capacity.
“Just added to our Fleet a couple years ago to replace the retirement of the Campbell plant.”
But Commissioner Josh Brugger says a recent report puts Michigan at high risk for insufficient generating capacity during periods of peak demand. And suggests consumers keep operating one of the 3 generators at J.H, Campbell
“I just ask that you stay online longer so that risk goes from high to elevated.”
“Because we have to bring in coal from such a distance operating only one unit doesn't make economic sense.”
“Are you going to lower rates because unless their electric bill is going to go down, I don’t think they would really care to see a change that could potentially impact reliability keeping it open would actually cause rates to go up.”
