When riverfront construction at the Grand Rapids Public Museum is finished later this year, the Cook Carousel Pavilion will be a fully accessible space inside and out.
The pavilion houses the Spillman Carousel which dates from 1928.
Part of the re-design includes adding a wheelchair-accessible ramp and a chariot to allow people with mobility devices to ride the carousel.
The museum’s $50 million expansion project began last year and will expand access, experiences, accessibility, and sustainability at the museum and its grounds on the Grand River at Pearl Street.
The major renovation is the first since the museum opened at its current location in 1994.
The Grand Rapids Public Museum is a 170-year-old, publicly owned institution home to more than 250,000 artifacts that tell the history of Kent County and beyond.
