Last year a jury convicted Jennifer Crumbley and her husband of involuntary manslaughter because they did not seek counseling for their troubled son and did not secure the weapon he used to kill classmates.
But Jennifer Crumbley’s new defense attorney, Michael Dezsi, argues in a court filing that Oakland County prosecutors hired two firms to launch a “smear campaign” against his client to skew public sentiment.
Dezsi also contends prosecutors did not follow an order to avoid making comments in the media...and instead allowed ABC News and the Washington Post access to their internal meetings.
In a statement, prosecutors counter that the public relations firms were necessary to address a string of false rumors and threats, and that the ABC and Washington Post stories were published well after the jurors reached a verdict.
Jennifer Crumbley wants her conviction overturned or a new trial.
