The show is returning to its long-time January time frame.
But the event now known simply as the Detroit Auto Show is not the same glitzy extravaganza it once was.
Only the Ford Motor Company seems ready to reveal brand new models at the show.
And while other major automakers plan to showcase their brands, many are also pushing their visions for electric vehicles in particular.
Organizers have several indoor tracks set up for test drives, and an outdoor area will reportedly incorporate part of the Detroit Grand Prix race course.
But officials say the main draw remains consumers ability to compare models from a variety of automakers all under one roof.
