An over-70-year-old Muskegon-based food manufacturer that pioneered frozen garlic bread has been sold to an Ontario company

Mississauga-based Furlani Foods announced last week that the company signed a definitive agreement to acquire Cole’s Quality Foods.

Cole’s was founded in Muskegon in 1943 by Caroll L. Cole and introduced frozen garlic bread to the North American market. It currently operates two production facilities in West Michigan and Iowa.

Furlani was founded in 1984 as a family baking business and is the number one brand of pre-packaged garlic breads in Canada. It’s pre-acquisition network includes three facilities in Ontario and Wisconsin.

In a statement, Cole’s CEO Scott Devon said the acquisition is “a combination of two enduring, family-founded companies. This is good news for the future of the company, our customers, and ultimately our consumers.”

Furlani believes combining these two brands and their production capabilities will drive innovation that benefits consumers.

Following the acquisition, which is expected to close in the first quarter of 2025, regular operations will remain in Ontario under Furlani Foods.
