Kent Count Animal shelter urgently seeks foster homes

Kent County Animal Shelter

The Kent County Animal Shelter is temporarily relocating to a smaller space, and it can’t take all the animals with them

The Kent County Animal Shelter is renovating its floor space and making several adjustments to its operations. As construction gets underway at 700 Fuller Avenue Northeast in Grand Rapids, animals and employees are relocating one mile away. The move begins January 21st.

The temporary location is smaller, reducing canine kennel capacity from 79 to 40. Feline housing capacity will also be reduced. While strays will still be accepted, the shelter must limit the amount of owned animal intake during the renovation.

The shelter is in urgent need of foster care or adoption of available pets during this time. Angela Hollinshead is Director at the shelter.

“So right now our focus is really working on trying to get some of the dogs that we’ve had in our shelter for a long period of time moved out into foster homes or, hopefully, their forever homes.”

Most foster commitments are short-term. Shelter renovations should be completed by mid-March 2025.

“So, we’re really reaching out to ask the community for support, not only for upcoming renovations, but really for the upcoming holidays as well, to help get some of these dogs out of the shelter environment for some of our longer holiday periods.”

The shelter will provide all necessary veterinary and basic care items during the animal’s stay at your home.

You can learn more about fostering or adoption by emailing the shelter at KCAS@KentCountyMI.gov
