“We’re designing it to really be the heartbeat of our city.”
The new Kentwood Community Center will be a 72,000-square-foot hub located at 4755 Walma Avenue, across the street from the Kentwood Justice Center. City Treasurer Laurie Sheldon says inclusivity is at the core of the center’s design.
“We’re really creating a space where everybody of all abilities can come and feel welcome, and there’ll actually be a unique fitness center designed specifically for individuals with disabilities.”
Other amenities include an AI-powered multisport simulator - a first-of-its-kind in Michigan - three full-sized basketball courts, elevated indoor track, bistro/café, a childcare room, and a Little Free Pantry for residents to donate and receive nonperishable food and personal care items.
“We’ll actually be the first parks and recreation facility in West Michigan with a liquor license, and so this’ll really bring the appeal of having a premium event space rental for weddings and whatnot.”
This is the first project to utilize funding from the city’s 2022 voter-approved parks millage. The center is expected to open in the summer of 2026.
