The $300 million dollar plan outlines future expansion projects at the John Ball Zoo over the next ten years.
It includes building a giraffe enclosure, the return of a sea lion habitat, construction of the largest indoor forest habitat in the country, a dedicated event center, and more.
But neighbors gathered at Thursday’s Kent County Commission meeting to object to the part of the plan that expands parking lots into existing green space in the adjacent park, neighbors like Paul DeBoer.
“As neighbors, we want to be excited about new exhibits and expansion, but we are surprised, concerned and saddened by the cost that only we absorb in the form of surrendered park space.”
Janet Zahn has climate concerns.
“Knowing that every time we reduce green space instead of adding to it in our community, we are adding to the burden of environmental justice.”
The plan was updated to address neighbors’ concerns and now spells out a requirement for the zoo to save as many trees as possible at a nearby pond.
It expands protected greenspace east of the road and addressed timelines for ending current overflow parking on greenspace.
Kent County Administrator Al Vandenberg appreciated the efforts.
“I would say, what the master plan does is clarify the areas that have been in dispute and that should help us all move forward I think with greater trust.”
The board voted to approve the revised master plan.
