John Ball Park parking plan for zoo vote postponed

A plan to pave more of John Ball Park for zoo parking spaces may not be dead, but it is delayed.

John Ball Zoo board member Casey Albell says they need more parking because zoo attendance is steadily increasing.

“even with modest attendance projections our currently paved parking is not adequate.

But after listening to objections during public comment the Kent County Finance and Physical Resources Committee is indefinitely postponing a vote on the zoo’s plan to pave green space in John Ball Park and add parking spaces. County Commissioner Carol Hennessy calls the plan paving over paradise.

“once the trees are gone the grass is paved its gone together.”

But the zoo says while their paving plan may make the park next door smaller, it will be better.

“through additional parking, minimizing traffic enhancements to green space, restrooms, paths once completed John Ball park will be another gem the west side can be proud of.”

“change this resolution, delay this resolution, but don’t pass this resolution let’s find another way forward.”
