Central Michigan University football coach Jim McElwain is retiring when the season ends this month

“We are unaware, totally unaware of it.”

Central Michigan Football coach Jim McElwain said he didn’t know anything about a possible sign stealer from the University of Michigan on his sidelines when the Chippewas played Michigan State in 2023.

“Our people are doing everything they can to get to the bottom of it.”

During the MSU game someone who looks like Connor Stallions, the U of M employee accused of stealing signs, was photographed near the Central Michigan bench disguised as a Chippewa coach.

“We obviously are aware of picture floating around of the sign stealer guy.”

But McElwaine says his program didn’t issue credentials to anyone named Connor Stallions, and if the alleged sign stealer was there collecting data on Michigan State, he did not know or approve.

“Certainly, don’t condone it in any way shape or form.”

A Central Michigan spokesman says McElwain made the decision to retire, there was no pressure from the university, and he will remain as an advisor.
