September 9th-13th is Active Commute Week – an initiative to encourage people to ride the bus, bike or carpool to see the positive impact of using alternative transportation instead of driving alone. And tracking those “green trips” can earn prizes from sponsors.
“We are able to see how many miles we’re getting in, how much money we’re saving on gasoline by not driving alone in our cars, we’re even able to track how many greenhouse gases we’re avoiding letting into the environment by taking these alternative modes of transportation.”
Carrie Veldman is the Membership Manager at Michigan Sustainable Business Forum which sponsors the event along with The Rapid bus system. There are events throughout the week, including a community bike ride Thursday and a community celebration Friday at Founders Brewing in Grand Rapids for people to share their experiences.
“We’re able to come together, win items, and look to the future of continuing to commute in a way that is more active and better for ourselves and our community.”
Details and registration can be found on the West Michigan Sustainable Business Forum website under Active Commute Week.
