A mixed-income, mixed-use housing development in Grand Rapids got a big check from the state, a week ahead of its groundbreaking

The 10-acre Boston Square Together development along Kalamazoo Avenue in southeast Grand Rapids is part of the plan to alleviate affordable housing needs in the area.

It will eventually include a community center to house early childhood learning, healthcare, fitness and enrichment, plus more than 200 units of housing for seniors and families, commercial space, and a new city park.

Amplify GR is a nonprofit community developer leading the project and it received a check for $1.5 million dollars in state appropriations this week for the Boston Square F3 part of the project set to start construction spring of 2025.

It will include 45 mixed-income units plus a 9,000 square foot food hall with space for 6-8 local food businesses to bring economic opportunity and increased eating options to the neighborhood.

A companion project called Boston Square F2 begins construction this fall on 57 housing units and 5,000 square feet of commercial retail space.

Its groundbreaking is planned for Thursday September 12 at noon.

The project will open to residents in 2026.
