Corewell Health, formally known as Spectrum Health, has signed on to operate a health center inside the $25 million Boston Square Community Hub.

The announcement comes as the building, located on 1534 Kalamazoo Avenue, undergoes construction to add a second floor.

Corewell Health will operate a health center on the main level of the building and will offer primary care services for both adult and pediatric patients.

Dr. Alejandro Quiroga, the president of Corewell Health in West Michigan, said the provider is "committed to community partnerships that help solve problems."

"This neighborhood has lower health outcomes than people who live in surrounding neighborhoods. We aim to disrupt that pattern and help people here thrive,” Quiroga said in a press release.

Corewell Health and other community partners and stakeholders involved with the project gathered onsite on April 26 to commemorate current construction work.

Lastesha Lipscomb is the Director of Engagement and Relationships for Amplify GR, one of the partners with Boston Square Together, a group that’s leading the project.

She told WGVU, the Community Hub was developed by taking a holistic approach to meeting community needs by providing an array of services all in one place.

“If we focus on education, economic opportunity, clean safe, affordable housing and access to community well-being and vibrant, clean, and safe spaces then we improve quality of life for all people while widening pathways and creating greater access,” she said.

Lipscomb adds the goal is to create equitable outcomes in the neighborhood.

In addition to a health center, the 45,000 square foot facility will feature a variety of wrap around services aimed at increasing access to resources and education.

Services include an early childhood center operated by the Early Neighborhood Collaborative, office and community programming space for Amplify GR, co-working space, a 240-person community event and performance space, a community café, and 8,000 square feet of wellness spaces.

The hub is expected open its first phase in early 2024 with completion expected in early 2025.
