Michigan Republican Congressman John James appeared in-district this week to raise support for a federal educational scholarship proposal

The bill would create a federal tax credit for donating to groups that provide scholarships to K-through-12 students.

Those scholarships could go toward private school tuition.

James says kids need more educational options.

“A one size fits all model may work for DC but it’s not working for the millions of kids that are being left behind.”

But Jennifer Smith—with the Michigan Association of School Boards—says the tax credits aren’t the best way of improving learning.

“We know that if you pull more funds out of the public schools, that’s not helping the public schools. We need to fully fund them. We need to properly fund them.”

Each Republican in Michigan’s Congressional delegation is a bill co-sponsor.
