But a recent University of Michigan study reveals that fear of judgement and discrimination are keeping some people from getting the support they need.

Kate Bauer is the lead author of the Feeding MI Families research project. She says many people do not want to be seen using an electronic benefit transfer card.

“The EBT card that holds food stamps in Michigan, the bridge card is bright orange. And over and over, parents are like: Oh my god, I pulled out the I pull out this bright orange card, and I'm so embarrassed.”

Bauer says one way to reduce stigma would be to make food assistance cards more discreet.
