The Attorney General is reissuing her Government Imposter Scams alert

Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel is urging residents to be vigilant against a new impersonation scam targeting consumers. A news release from her office says this new scam involves individuals posing as representatives offering “free government money from the CARES Act,”. They claim the funds are expiring soon in an effort to steal personal information.

Attorney General Nessel says, “Scammers are constantly devising new tricks to steal personal information. It’s crucial to be aware of these scams and avoid offers that seem too good to be true.”

Because of this, the Attorney General is reissuing her Government Imposter Scams alert. She is advising consumers who have received communications from imposters to protect themselves from the scams by: blocking the text, email or call. Do not click on links or open attachments and report the text or email to the Federal Trade Commission and delete the text or email from your device.

Nessel also says that government agencies will not offer free money or grants or threaten arrest or legal action if money is not sent.
