Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer addresses the crowd during inauguration ceremonies, Sunday, Jan. 1, 2023, outside the state Capitol in Lansing, Mich.

Whitmer says the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision to toss a challenge to the abortion drug mifepristone is also important to upholding Michigan’s reproductive rights amendment

Abortion rights have legal protection in Michigan under state laws and an amendment to the state constitution adopted by voters in 2022. But the loss of one of two drugs most commonly used in medication abortions would affect access.

So, Whitmer's Press Secretary Stacey Larouche says this is a win for reproductive rights in Michigan.

“Mifepristone will remain safe, legal and available to Michiganders despite another attempt by partisan, out-of-touch extremists trying to strip away reproductive freedom.”

Reproductive rights are a political issue in this election year - including the presidential race, some close races for congressional seats and control of the state House.
