Retired MSP detective charged with murder in death of suspect

Michigan State Police

Sergeant Brian Keely, charged for hitting and killing a fleeing suspect with an unmarked cruiser, pled not guilty in a Kentwood courtroom Wednesday

Former MSP Detective Sergeant Brian Keely was arraigned in Kentwood on charges of second-degree murder and involuntary manslaughter in the death of Samuel Sterling.

Keely pled not guilty to both charges.

The charges come from an April 17th incident at a Kentwood gas station in which a crime task force approached Sterling who was wanted on felony warrants.

Video shows Sterling running from officers who chased him on foot into the parking lot of a Burger King where he was struck by an unmarked police vehicle driven by Keely.

Sterling died at the hospital hours later.

If convicted, Keely faces life in prison on the murder charge, up to 15 years on involuntary manslaughter.

The MSP announced Keely’s retirement the day before he was arraigned.

His next court date is a probable cause hearing set for June 17th.
