Income discrimination in housing bills heading for full House

Wikimedia Commons

It could become illegal in Michigan to deny renting to someone because of their source of income under a bill package headed for the full state House

The package intends to help people like those who are older, have lower income or are veterans, who may use various forms of government housing assistance to pay their rent.

Democratic Representative Jason Morgan is a package co-sponsor:

“One story is of someone who I’ve heard who could absolutely demonstrate that they could pay their rent. They’re working, they’re receiving a Section 8 voucher that will assist them in paying their rent. And they try to go to an apartment to receive housing and the landlord will simply say, ‘Sorry. We don’t rent to people on Section 8.”

Critics have shared concerns about the extra burdens landlords can face when they accept housing vouchers.
