Judge Christopher Yates says he’s putting a decision on a legal challenge to state election guidance on a fast track

The guidance to local clerks came from Democratic Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson. It regards the process for verifying signatures on absentee ballot forms against signatures on file with election clerks. The Secretary of State says it’s necessary to implement a voting rights amendment to the Michigan Constitution. The Republican National Committee is among the plaintiffs challenging the guidance.

Judge Christopher Yates says the window for early voting is approaching and he expects whatever he decides will be challenged to higher courts. And he says he’ll able to live with whatever comes of that.

“I’ll be pleased it will be hopefully settled once and for all.”

Yates says he expects to issue his decision within the next couple of weeks – probably right after the Memorial Day weekend.
