Progress is underway on a Kent County facilities plan. Demolition has started on one property already

Crews and heavy equipment are at work this week, demolishing the former Michigan State Police forensic science laboratory on Fuller Avenue in Grand Rapids to make way for a new Kent County administration building on the Fuller Campus near the sheriff’s office and county jail.

The former Kent Community Hospital will come down too after its lease with Corewell Health expires in October.

When the new $60 million administration building is finished, roughly 200 county employees working downtown will move from 300 Monroe near Grand Rapids City Hall and Calder Plaza.

The Monroe offices will be renovated for the county prosecutor and other staff who will from their building at 82 Ionia.

That will be sold in hopes of being converted into residential apartments.

It’s projected to take about five years to complete all phases of the Kent County relocation project.
