FEMA has set up a Kent County-based Disaster Recovery Center for those affected by severe weather in August of last year, but time is of the essence if you want to file a claim

Last month, the Federal Emergency Management Agency announced that owners of residential and commercial property damaged by last August’s EF-1 tornado could apply for disaster relief. This includes basic home repairs, temporary lodging, and other disaster-related expenses.

This week, FEMA opened a Disaster Recovery Center in Comstock Park assisting with those efforts. Kent County Emergency Manager Coordinator Matt Groesser explains.

“Really, the value of the Disaster Recovery Center is for questions, concerns, after you’ve already applied to try to kind of add any detail that you need for your application.”

Or, if you’re having trouble uploading documents. For those who have already filled out paperwork and received a letter of ineligibility, they can stop by the center to find out what additional information is required.

“We are learning that that is somewhat a routine part of the process in that you should read those ineligibility notices carefully because a lot of times it just means that you haven’t sent in enough information at that point in the process.”

Groesser says that around 300 individuals have applied for relief in Kent County so far.

The Disaster Recovery Center is located at the Alpine Township Fire Station number 1 and will only be open for one week, from 8 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. It closes this Saturday, March 16th. You can find more information online at DisasterAssistance.gov
